Emotion, the body and judgement
Emotion includes bodily changes, subjective experience, interpretation and action tendencies. It can reveal what matters while also carrying feelings unrelated to the current problem into judgement.

An episode of anger may include a racing heart, perceived unfairness, changes in expression or voice, and an urge to object. Experience, physiology, expression and appraisal are connected but need not change in perfect synchrony. A calm face cannot establish absence of feeling, and a raised pulse cannot independently distinguish fear, excitement, exercise recovery or another physical change. OpenStax Psychology: emotion
Emotion is often closely linked to an event or meaning, whereas mood tends to be more sustained and diffuse, although the boundary is not absolute. Pleasantness describes one dimension and arousal describes activation. Fatigue and anger can both feel unpleasant while differing in arousal and action tendencies. Specific descriptions make responses easier to select. Calling every uncomfortable state negative energy obscures the different goals, information and needs associated with disappointment, worry, shame and anger. OpenStax Psychology: emotion
Appraisal connects the same event with different meanings
Appraisal evaluates an event’s relationship to goals, interests and coping resources. A message saying “come and talk tomorrow” may suggest opportunity to one person, criticism to another, and insufficient information to a third. The same words can elicit different feelings because interpretation uses context and experience. This does not make external facts irrelevant or imply that a positive sentence can remove any emotion. Classical theories emphasise bodily feedback, parallel changes in physiology and experience, or the joint contribution of arousal and contextual interpretation. They generate testable questions but do not establish that one short sequence explains every emotion. Bodily signals influence experience, which can alter breathing, posture and behaviour in return. Tracing events, initial interpretations, physical changes and action is useful, but retrospective impressions of timing alone cannot establish the underlying neural causal order. Emotions depend on networks rather than one switch
The amygdala contributes to threat-related and emotional learning, the hippocampus to contextual and memory relationships, and prefrontal and other regions to goals, appraisal and regulation. Each also performs other functions. The amygdala is not merely a fear button, and prefrontal cortex is not a rational commander entirely opposed to emotion. One way to test the components is to measure experience, expression and physiology together. In an experiment by Gross, participants viewed a disgusting film while reinterpreting it, hiding their expression or watching naturally. Both regulation instructions reduced outward expression, but changes in experience and physiology differed. This supports distinguishing components rather than assuming that a calm appearance means every response has diminished. Emotion can inform judgement and spill across contexts
Feelings directly related to a decision can provide information about values and consequences. Anger about a broken commitment may highlight fairness or trust, while worry may prompt risk checking. Feelings are not final verdicts on facts: anger does not prove deliberate harm, and fear does not directly quantify the probability of danger. Incidental emotion arises elsewhere but influences the present decision, as frustration during a commute may produce a harsher response to a neutral request. Equally unpleasant emotions can differ in certainty, responsibility judgements and risk preferences, so positive versus negative alone cannot predict every decision. Research identifies patterned influences while outcomes remain task- and context-dependent. Ask whether a feeling originates in the matter currently being judged or has been carried over from another event before treating it as evidence about the present choice. Regulation changes a process, not only an expression
Regulation can involve selecting or modifying situations, directing attention, reinterpreting meaning or adjusting expression. Cognitive reappraisal changes an interpretation to alter emotional impact; expressive suppression mainly limits outward expression after emotion has emerged. They target different components and times, so hiding expression does not guarantee that the feeling or bodily response will disappear. Regulation can also maintain useful feelings rather than only reduce every intense state. Suitability depends on goals, context and controllability. For a changeable problem, reorganising work or clarifying a misunderstanding may be more direct than repeatedly demanding calm. For an event that cannot immediately change, accepting feelings, seeking support or redirecting attention may support functioning. Reappraisal should fit evidence: insufficient information warrants asking, not certainty that nothing is wrong. Temporarily limiting expression can serve a purpose, but masking alone may leave needs unresolved. Evaluate subsequent functioning and relationships rather than outward composure alone. Use one message to distinguish facts from interpretations
A student asks a teammate to confirm tasks, receives no reply for two hours, feels angry and concludes that the teammate is disrespectful. The student plans to abandon the project. The established observation is a missing reply; intentional disregard is one interpretation. Class attendance, an unseen message or time needed to check details are alternatives. Record four components: observed facts, assigned meaning, bodily responses and feelings, and intended behaviour. Then choose a step that adds information, such as communicating the deadline and asking whether the message arrived. Repeated broken commitments may justify changing boundaries; a misunderstanding should update the explanation. The goal is not permanent positivity but decisions informed by emotion, evidence and values. Someone can recognise anger and act constructively while still feeling it; sound judgement does not require the feeling to disappear completely.
